SHOWALTER

Richard E. Showalter, 83, of Convoy, died at 8:14 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2009, at Van Wert County Hospital in Van Wert.

He was born May 28, 1926, in Van Wert, the son of the late Byron A. and Eva (Lare) Showalter. On September 18, 1948, he married Bernita J. (Sherburn) Showalter, who survives in Convoy.

Mr. Showalter was a lifetime farmer and a member of Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church in Van Wert. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and a member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert. Mr. Showalter was also a Golden Sheaf member of Pleasant Grange, a former director of the Ohio Guernsey Association, a member of the Van Wert Dairy Association and a former board member of the Convoy Equity Exchange.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, David A. Showalter of Convoy; one brother, Byron Wayne (Louise) Showalter of Ohio City; a sister, Vivian Oechsle of Convoy; and three grandchildren, Kristen (Joel) McClosky, Nick (Julia) Showalter and Brent Showalter.

A daughter, Brenda J. Schumm, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, November 6, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating, assisted by Rev. Ron Lumm. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Convoy, with graveside military rites performed by the combined honors units of Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both in Van Wert.

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, November 5, at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials: Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church or a charity of donor’s choice.

AMES

Gertha K. Ames, 94, of Paulding, died at 11:05 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2009, at Country Inn Assisted Living in Paulding.

She was born November 3, 1914, in Grover Hill, the daughter of the late George and Hattie (Davis) Wyatt. On June 5, 1937, she married Everett G. Ames, who preceded her in death on April 23, 2008.

Survivors include two children, Marese (Tim) Bechler of Hastings, Mich., and Randy (Alice) Ames of Wauseon; a sister, Karma (William) Van Schoyck of Celina; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A brother, Glessner “Bud” Wyatt, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday, November 6, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with the Rev. Steve Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Mohr Cemetery in rural Van Wert County.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, November 5, at the funeral home.
