Sheriff Stan D. Owens has released the Sheriff Department activity Report for July 2010. Sheriff Department cruisers traveled 18528 miles wile on patrol, transporting prisoners to state institutions and juveniles to juvenile detention center facilities, answering citizens' complains, serving criminal and civil papers and performing other department functions. Of the total miles driven, 2,797 were made on inmate transports for a total of 18 trips. 142 prisoners were housed in the Van Wert County Correctional Facility.
The average daily inmate count was 43 for the month. Inmates housed for other counties generated MTD $7,470, YTD 101,160 which will be paid into the General Fund. Other inmate programs generating income paid into the County General Fund are: Inmate Work Release MTD $640.07 YTD $4,037.65, Inmate Phone Service MTD $988.64 YTD $7,588.68, Inmate Pay to Stay MTD $3 YTD $17, Office of Child Nutrition Services -- Government Donated Food Enrollment MTD $79.92 YTD $7,199.58. The food cost per meal per inmate was $142. The inmate work crews worked a total of 1107 hours at the Sheriff Office and jail.
Deputies handled a total of 118 citizens' complaints with reports filed and 84 complaints that did not required reports or any further investigation. Three traffic accidents were investigated during the month. Ten traffic citations and 22 traffic warnings were issued to motorists. Deputies filed 29 criminal cases. Deputies made 137 assists to motorists and other departments during the month and handled two funeral procession escorts. While on patrol, deputies found 32 open doors at businesses, schools, and residential house checks. Sixty-six homes of vacationing county residents were checked for a total of 501 times and a total of four business and residential alarms were answered.
Deputies served a total of 211 of 247 papers received from the Courts during the month. Five sheriff sales were conducted and 23 sheriff sales were received. The department K-9 team worked 17 perimeter checks of buildings while on patrol and did two building searches, one area search and one drug search. Four new criminal investigations were forwarded to the Detective Bureau; 16 felony charges were filed and $500 in stolen property was recovered. Forty-one web checks were processed for residents. There were 19 sex offender registrations for periodic registrations, change of addresses, employment or other offender status changes conducted during the month. Sixty-four ex offender notices were sent or delivered to residents, schools, daycare facilities, preschool and law enforcement agencies. Six new or renewed handgun Concealed Carry Licenses were issued during the month. Forty-three Child Photo IDs were provided to parents.
