Yackey was a swimmer as a child and swam for the Van Wert High School swim team. She started her children swimming at an early age. Her son, Rylan, who is now 21 and a senior at Bowling Green State University, started swim competitively when he was 6. Yackey’s daughter, Hannah, now a sophomore at Butler University in Indiana, started swimming when she was 5 years old.
Mary Yackey is married to husband Damon.
Yackey has given her time and talent to the WOAL since 1996, when she was mentored into the computer and data entry job by her sister, Deb Laudick, who had been doing entries for the WOAL for many years.
Yackey’s daughter graduated from high school last year, but Yackey has continued to be the computer wizard and entry person for the WOAL league, the Van Wert YMCA and the Van Wert High School swim team. In addition, she has also served as an official for the WOAL and the YMCA for 12 years.
League officials note that Yackey has always done an outstanding job of running the computer tent during the Elks Championship meet and has also volunteered to run computer for hundreds of dual and invitational meets for both the YMCA and high school. She has dedicated numerous hours entering each child in the meet and is diligent about the scoring of each event and meet.
Yackey is a wealth of knowledge and support for all who work with her. She has helped anyone who needed assistance learning how to run the computer programs of “meet manager” and “team manager” and all the headaches in between.
The WOAL is very appreciative of all the volunteer
time, work and talent Yackey has shared with the league swimming community.

From Monday
Cougar golfer busy with summer tourneys
Van Wert High School senior to be, Blake Doidge, had a busy week on the links.
Playing in the state championship of the Optimist Tournament this past Monday, Doidge was assigned the first tee time of the day. Completing the first nine holes with a two-over-par 38, Doidge was ready to tee off on the back nine when the suspension of play siren went off. Two inches of rain and five hours in between shots, the tournament officials sent the players back out.
The course at Weatherwax Country Club was soggy and the players had to adjust their games. Hard, fast greens became dartboards for the golfers and the later tee times had this advantage and the option to lift, clean, and place their ball due to the playing conditions. Doidge completed his back nine with a 39 and had to wait another two hours to see if he qualified for the National Optimist Tournament in Palm Springs, Fla.
The top 20 players were going to qualify for Florida. After an hour of waiting, Doidge was sitting in 13th place. Another hour past and the group of golfers with the score of 77 was on the bubble, sitting in the 19th spot. Two groups remained on the course and if one of the players shot a 76 or better the 77s were out. Two players recorded rounds of 73 and the long waiting for Doidge ended in disappointment for his chance to advance to Florida as he finished in a tie for 21st. Austin Clarkson from Delphos Jefferson finished with an 80.
Next up for Doidge was a long drive to Ashland, Ky., as he participated in the American Junior Golf Association event. He first participated in a fundraising tournament, which doubled as his practice round, and his team came in 10th place. The tournament at the Bellefontaine Country Club was a three-day event with a cut after 36 holes.
His 12:30 tee time was in the second wave of players as 108 boys teed it up. Doidge's playing companions were from Bethesda, Md., and Lexington, Ky. His first nine holes were highlighted by making an opening eagle on the 510-yard par 5. Doidge turned in a 37 and the heat, humidity, and hilly terrain was the winner on the back nine. Doidge finished with a 43 on the back nine for first-round score of 80. The top scores for the day were a 65 from a 13-year-old from Pinehurst, N.C., Joshua Martin; a 67 from Paul Sansom of Russellville, Ky., and a foursome of 68s.
A 7:30 tee time made for a quick turnaround and Doidge started his second round by making two birdies against one bogey for a one under par score at the turn. Knowing the cut was going to be made, Doidge had to make some things happen and got away from his strategy and fired at the pins. Doidge rounded off his back nine with a 40 to finish at 77. His two-day total of 157 missed the cut for the final round of competition. However, Doidge gained vast tournament experience as well as a new appreciation for the talent that is around the country.
Martin ended up winning the tournament with rounds of 65, 71 and 67. He was in second place to Sansom after day 2 but won the tournament on the third day by one stroke. Sansom had rounds of 67,65 and 72.
Doidge will travel to Avon to
play in the AJGA event this Monday through Thursday and will enjoy the Fourth of
July weekend and travel to Harbor Springs, Mich., for a Monday-Thursday event at
Highlands Country Club.

By ROCKY McVAIGH
For The Van Wert independent
LIMA – The Van Wert Marlins traveled to Lima to compete against Sherwood Swim Club, with the Marlins dropping the match 518-219.

As has been the case the last couple meets, due to Van Wert’s smaller team size, they were only able to field two relay teams. The 11-12 girls’ team (Madelyn Buettner, Bethany Fast, Ashton Bowersock, Natalie Riethman) finished third in both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay. WBL wins aerial war with MAC/NWC
By DAVE MOSIER
Van Wert independent Editor
Kenton’s Mike Mauk and Ada’s Mike Fell are both known for their pass-oriented coaching philosophies and the result during Friday night’s Van Wert County Hospital Western Buckeye League vs. Midwest Athletic Conference/Northwest Conference All-Star Football Game was a record-shattering aerial contest won by Mauk’s WBL team 40-25.
|
Defiance's Sean Murray (8)hauls in a pass against defender Mitchell MacLennan of Delphos St. John's. |
The two teams combined for a record 703 yards passing – nearly 300 yards more than the previous record – while Shawnee’s Dillon Risser was just a yard short of tying the passing record of 352 yards set by Crestview’s Matt Perkins back in 2005, according to the independent’s unofficial stats.
Risser did set a new mark for passing touchdowns, throwing for six of them to break the record of four shared by Perkins and Chad Otte of Marion Local (2003), while hitting 22 of 46 passes and throwing two interceptions.
MAC/NWC quarterbacks Jordan Jettinghoff of Delphos Jefferson and Crestview’s Steve Semer combined for 352 yards passing, with Jettinghoff getting the lion’s share of that. Jettinghoff was 24 of 46 with three touchdowns and three interceptions, while Semer hit 4 of 6 passes for 20 yards, no TDs and no interceptions.
Lima Central Catholic wide receiver Desi Kirkman caught 11 passes for 182 yards to finish second in the record books behind Delphos St. John’s Don Haggard, who caught seven passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns in the 2003 contest. Paulding’s Justin Riley caught five passes for 71 yards for the MAC/NWC team. For the WBL, Shawnee’s Josh Tuck caught two passes for 90 yards – including one catch for 77 yards that ended when he was brought down at the 3-yard-line – to lead his team, while Lombardo caught five passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns, Nofziger had three catches for 60 yards and two TDS and Laubenthal hauled in one pass for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Defiance’s Alex Nofziger had a record-tying two interceptions in the game for the WBL.
The WBL led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and was up 28-13 at the half. Two unanswered TDs in the third quarter left the WBL with an insurmountable 40-13 lead heading into the final quarter, although the MAC/NWC team staged a mini-comeback to get within 15 at the final gun.
The WBL hit the scoreboard first on a 16-yard scoring strike from Risser to Defiance’s Aaron Swanson with 6:50 left in the first quarter. The conversion run failed and it was 6-0, WBL.
The MAC/NWC squad took less than a minute to take the lead as Jettinghoff threw a 59-yard TD pass to Kirkman with 5:56 remaining. Aaron Swaney of Allen East kicked the extra point and it was 7-6, MAC/NWC.
|
Van Wert's Nate Williams (12) gets ready to catch a pass over the outstretched hands of defender Rayce Risser of Columbus Grove. |
The WBL then took the lead for good with just two seconds remaining in the first stanza with a 46-yard pass from Risser to Ottawa-Glandorf receiver Brian Laubenthal for a 12-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
Risser tossed two scoring strikes in the second quarter – the first for 10 yards to Nofziger at 10:41 and the second for 38 yards to Dan Lombardo at the 9:36 mark. The WBL also made two-point conversions on both TDs, with Risser hitting Lombardo on the first one and Elida’s Derek Cunningham on the second one.
The MAC/NWC scored a touchdown with 6:02 remaining in the second stanza when Jettinghoff found Kirkman on a 20-yard scoring strike to make the score 28-13 at the half.
It was all WBL in the third quarter. Risser connected with Lombardo on a 26-yard TD pass at the 5:11 mark and found Nofziger for a 21-yard score with 3:35 remaining in the quarter.
The MAC/NWC finished up the scoring in the final period. Jettinghoff scored on a keeper from a yard out with 2:48 remaining in the game and then threw a 26-yard strike to Kirkman, who turned what appeared to be an interception into a TD with a minute remaining.
A big stat in the game for the MAC/NWC team was three fumbles, two of those lost to the WBL. The WBL squad took much better care of the ball, with no fumbles in the game.
Rushing was definitely not a factor, with the WBL able to generate only 28 yards on 21 carries and the MAC/NWC doing even worse, with a minus-15 yards on 28 carries.
With the win, the WBL now has four victories against sev
en
defeats in the annual all-star series. After losing the first five games of the
series to their smaller-school opponents, the WBL has won four of the last six
contests.

Crestview girls bow out in regional semis
By The Van Wert independent
FINDLAY – The Crestview Lady Knights sputtered as they lost 2-1 to New Riegel in a regional semifinal game played Wednesday at Findlay High School.
The Knights, typically a big-hitting team, have struggled at times to generate runs in tournament play, including a 2-1 win in extra innings over Lima Perry in the district finals.
The Lady Blue Jackets scored twice in the second and then held Crestview to a run the remainder of the way to eke out the win. With the loss, the Lady Knights end the season with a record of 23-5, while New Riegel is now 23-6 on the season.
Chelsey Lare took the loss for Crestview, going the distance and giving up both earned runs on six hits and no walks, while striking out eight batters. Taylor Mathias was the winning pitcher for the Lady Jackets, also going the distance and allowing one earned run on seven hits, while walking no one and striking out two.
The Lady Knights were led at the plate by Dani Hicks, who had two hits, while Jessica Burger scored Crestview’s lone run on a solo home run in the fifth inning. Paula Kelbly led New Riegel with two hits and a run scored, while Sarah Reinhart knocked in both runs on a double in the second inning. Shana Scherger also had two singles in the game for the Lady Blue Jackets.

Local track athletes advance to regionals
By The Van Wert independent
A number of area track and field team members are headed to regionals after performances at district competition this past week.
The Van Wert girls did well, breaking four school records and placing fifth as a team – just one place shy of advancing to regionals as a team – something that has not been done at Van Wert, at least in recent memory.
Qualifying for regional competition for the girls was Sydney Riethman, who set a school record of 16 feet, 8¼ inches, in the long jump to win the district title in that event. Riethman’s older sister, Madison, also set a school record of 2:18.95 in the 800-meter run to take second place in that event, while the 4x400-meter relay team (Jacey Eikenbary, the Riethman sisters and Rachael Scheidt) finished fourth in a school-record team of 4:12.60 to also qualify for regionals.
Also qualifying for the girls was the 4x800-meter relay team (Eikenbary, Lauren Taylor, Madison Riethman and Allison Rogers), which finished fourth and also set a school record of 9.52.01.
Taylor didn’t set any school records, but qualified for regional competition in two events, the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, finishing second in both events at the district meet.
Katie Bono also qualified in the 3200-meter run with a fourth-place finish in 12:16.88.
For the boys, who competed at the Bucyrus district meet, five Cougars will be advancing to regionals, either individually or as members of relay teams.
Freshman Jared Fleming finished second in the 1600-meter run in a time of 4:34.14 and also qualified in the 800-meter run with a third-place finish in 2:00.74.
In addition to Fleming, two Van Wert relay teams will be heading for regionals this week.
The 4x100-meter relay team (Connor Massillo, Reggie Phillips, Kirtis Calvelage and Sam Tindall) finished fourth in a time of 44.38 seconds, while the 4x200-meter relay team, comprised of the same runners, finished third in a time of 1:32.01.
Crestview and Lincolnview track teams competed in the district finals at Minster on Saturday, with both sending athletes to regional competition.
For the Lancers, Katie Runyon qualified for the regional meet on Thursday by placing third. Joining her will be Casey Patterson, who placed third in the 200-meter dash and the girls’ 4x100-meter relay team (Patterson, Taylor Miller, Haley McAbee, Calista Dowdy), which placed fourth.
“It is exciting to see these kids qualify for the regional meet next week,” said Lincolnview Coach Matt Langdon. “They have worked very hard and were focused on making it to the next level.
“Katie has goals of breaking the school record, and only needs to better her season best by three feet,” Coach Langdon added. “Casey has already tied the school record and the relay broke the school record in the district semis.
Coach Langdon noted that qualifiers really responded to the challenges that were put in front of them and now get a chance to experience regional competition, which will hopefully give them the opportunity to advance and lower the school records even further.”
Other Lancers placing at the district meet include: Kerri Grothaus, eight in the 1600-meter run; McAbee, sixth in the 100-meter dash; the 4x800-meter relay team (Taylar Boroff, Sabrina Barnhart, Karissa Burns and Grothaus), sixth; and, for the boys, Mac King, seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.
Crestview had two district champions in the same event. Jo Thompson won the 400-meter dash in the girls’ competition in a time of 1:00.68, while Ryan Ramey won the boys’ 400-meter in 50.59 seconds.
Freshman Courtney Perrott advanced with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:25.11, while Rob Cook was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 1½ inches.
The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team
(Layne Callow, Natalie Frey, Erika Frey and Thompson) was fourth in 4:06.57 to
qualify, while Garret Gleckler qualified
with a fourth-place finish in the
3200-meter run in a time of 10:19.63.

Cougar track teams 6th at WBL meet
The Van Wert track teams had mixed results at the Western Buckeye League championships at Shawnee, with the boys and girls both finishing in sixth place, although with some individual and relay wins.
Event winners include Kirtis Calvelage, who won the 200-meter dash in 23.42 seconds and also was part of the 4x200-meter relay team (along with Reggie Phillips, Sam Tindall and Connor Massillo) that won the race in a WBL-record time of 1:31.7.
The 4x100-meter relay team – favored to win that event – didn’t finish the race as a poor baton hand-off led to a disappointing result.
For the Lady Cougars, Lauren Taylor had the best finish of the
day, taking second place in the 3200-met
er race 11:55.40. She also finished
third in the 1600-meter race in a time of 5:26.93.

The tournament was played on the White Hawk Country Club located in Crown Point, Ind. The 6,978-yard layout hosted 78 male golfers from around the country. The par 72 course played tough, with winds in excess of 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph.
Mike Wolf of Cincinnati won the event with a total of 146.
Doidge finished in a tie for 26th, shooting rounds of 79 and 80, respectively. The preseason event is for first time AJGA participants and helps players earn performance stars. Doidge earned a performance star for his showing.
All AJGA tournament fields are filled based on the criteria of performance stars and tournament exemptions. The more stars and exemptions a player has, the more opportunity he has to be accepted into an open tournament. There are two open tournaments in Ohio, one located in Avon Lake and the other at the Country Club at Muirfield Village in Dublin.
Doidge currently has applied to the both Ohio tournaments, as well as one in Ashland, Ky., and one in Harbor Springs, Mich., and will apply for future tournaments as the summer schedule permits.
This past weekend, Doidge participated in the Ohio Optimist Golf Tournament at Delphos Country Club. Doidge finished in a tie for fourth place to advance in a field of 32 golfers in his age group. He will play at Weatherwax Country Club in Middletown on July 21. If he qualifies out of that tournament, he will participate in the National Optimist Tournament held in Palm Springs, Fla.
There will be a golf tournament
held at the Hickory Sticks Golf Club on May 22. Teams need a team handicap of 30
or more for the scramble format. Entry fee is $200 for a four-person team.
Greens fees, carts and a lunch is included in the fee. Contact DJ Dull and his
staff at Hickory Sticks Golf Club, 419.238.0441, for more details.
